Phase-Free: Friend or Foe?
Broadcast Engineering and Information Technology Conference
Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters in DSP and their potential for zero-phase shift filtering are daily and commonplace. Yet these filters are generally only cursorily understood, as are their constraints compared to conventional analogue or their equivalent digital minimum-phase approaches. Even more so is the acknowledgement that they 'sound different', the root causes of which are rarely understood. That said, phase-free filtering has and can afford performance breakthroughs and radical solutions, which Steve Dove presents here. He presents a most interesting case study of the use of FIR filters to solve a fairly recent problem for air-chain processors of over-dense source material.
